Hi Room 2 Families,
A Swiss family has been traveling the world to learn about climate change and they've come to visit us at Happy Hollow! Dario and Sabine Schwoerer and their five children~ Salina, Andri, Noe, Alegra and Mia, have come ashore long enough to visit the area as they do
at each stage of their travel. They arrived at Happy Hollow on Monday and will be staying through next week. Noe and Alegra have joined our classroom community, their brother, Andri, is visiting Mrs. Roger's 4th grade class and their sister Salina, is visiting with the fifth graders. On Wednesday, the Schwoerer family shared a video presentation, photos, and stories about their global climate expedition, Top To Top, in hopes of "Inspiring Youth to Save the Planet."
They’ve presented to over 100,000 school children around the
world. Their travels have included trips through the Northwest passage, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, Africa, and more. They do a great deal of hiking and biking during the expedition as well, and have even been to Mt. McKinley and Mt. Everest! Dario and Sabine shared many ways kids can be a part of the positive movement to take care of the planet both in and out of school; picking up trash on the playground during recess, turning off lights when not in use, biking/walking instead of using a car when possible, taking shorter showers, turning off water when not in use, recycling, and more.
We've learned some fascinating things about their travels and their lives. Did you know that when they see dolphins swimming near their boat, it's a sign that land is near? The kids speak 4 languages (Swiss German, French, Italian and English) and have been helping us to learn several greetings in these languages. They've also been teaching us how to count in Swiss German. The children are home-schooled on the boat but also love being in the classroom setting. They've been eager learners and our Room 2 community has welcomed them in such wonderful ways! The kids are really enjoying getting to know each other, learning and working together, playing on the playground together, sharing lunch and snack together and learning how we can come together as one to work towards a cleaner, greener planet.
